Increasing Hispanic Enrollment in Catholic Schools
Calvo Consulting, hired by the Diocese of Arlington, to develop a multi-year project to increase hispanic enrollment and design an outreach program worked with the Office of Catholic Schools in northern Virginia. The team included Daniel Ferris, Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Cecilia Calvo and Michelle Ryan, prinicipal researcher.
Our work produced:
a baseline measure to establish enrollment comparison to the local community
an evaluation of the school climate for non-English speakers
an outreach plan for the school and surrounding community
a collaboration of local service providers, community agencies and school personnel to support families and students in area schools
Michelle Ryan's research thesis, for the University of Notre Dame, analyzes the challenges in increasing Hispanic enrollment in Catholic Schools and summarizes some of our findings.
Ryan, M. (2009). Enrollment of Latino students in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Arlington. Unpublished master's thesis, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN.
The research focuses on schools in the Diocese with contrasting pictures of Latino enrollment and examines the family, school, and other social factors that impact the enrollment of Latino children in Catholic schools. This research is invaluable to anyone seeking to increase enrollment of Latino children in Catholic schools, and expanding community outreach to create a school culture that is welcoming to Latino families.
